Educating the Whole Child.

River Birch Tree Classroom

1ST GRADE

In first grade, students will learn how to solve addition problems with sums up to 20, do subtraction problems with numbers 0-20, and learn how to tell time to the nearest hour and half-hour using analog and digital clocks.

Students will look closely at pictures and do "close reads" with books.  They will practice expressing what they notice and wonder and will often have partner or group discussions. Through this practice they will learn how to express their own point of view and build on others ideas.

We will build important reading and writing skills and at the end of the year students should be able to attempt to write and spell new words phonetically, read and write common words such as where and every, and write complete sentences with correct capitalization and punctuation.

a little about me

Email >

Hello! My name is Joann Meyers. I am honored and excited to teach first grade at Greenwood. I naturally gravitated to working in classrooms because of my own love of learning. Through art, literature, and music, I bring a creative and cheerful perspective in my teaching.

Seeing the bright spark and excitement when students understand something new, inspires me to be the best teacher I can be.

I have my bachelors in Language Arts from Idaho State University and my Masters in Elementary Education from Western Governors University. I have taught preschool, reading and math intervention, and am a former children’s librarian.

My little family and I love Utah and all the outdoors have to offer. Hiking, kayaking, camping, and gardening are some of our favorite things to do. I have three children, 13, 11, and 10 who keep me on my toes.

I believe every child is unique and brings their own strengths to our community. Together, we can teach the leaders of tomorrow.

You’ll be on your way up! You’ll be seeing great sights! You’ll join the high fliers who soar to high heights.”
